13 Days of Hallowe'en 2019

Spudguns!, it's Saturday the 19th of October, which means Hallowe'en week officially begins today.  I thought it would be great to sink our fangs into a 13 day movie post.  That's right, back to the roots of the blog, for the next week and a half, I'm going to post one movie a day. Groovy right?

Day 1:

movie: Gingerdead Man (13 Nights of Elvira version)

plot: When a serial killer vows revenge on the one person who turned him in, his soul is reborn in a cookie that wrecks havoc on a small town.

Okay, this is pretty straight forward, and is a direct rip off of the Child's Play movies. There isn't a whole lot of story going on here, in fact even with the classic Elvira intro/extro and interruptions, this movie was barely 80 minutes.  The jokes are as stale as they are raunchy, and at times don't even fit with the tone of the scene. Such as one of the characters being hit over the skull with a fry pan before being forgotten for half the movie, only to be found covered in whipped cream. I get that the killer is a giant cookie, but even a direct food reference should have had more of a set up for the joke.

The end of the film, has the "hero", who by the way is on screen for about 4 minutes; get killed. Yeah, sorry opps spoiler alert but yeah he does. He eats the evil gingerdead man and becomes possessed himself.  Now, correct me if I'm wrong in thinking, if the dead dude in the cookie could possess people simply by having them eat him, wouldn't he have forced someone to bite into him sooner? I mean, the gingerdead man spends half the movie stuck in a bakery with limited abilities, and the second someone takes a bite out of him he has triple the powers. 

The plot is thin even for Full Moon Features. Who, by the way, are still the best at low budget films. The characters themselves are less than one dimensional, and deliver their lines like paper weights.

Honestly, I found the addition of Elvira's intro/extro the funniest part of the script for this; and feel this is one time Full Moon Features dropped the ball. To say Gingerdead Man is half baked is an understatement.  Since this is the "hosted by Elvira" version of the movie (2014 on her show) , I have to comment on the sketch she does. It's her baking cookies and eating them. Which, given the material she had to try to work with this time around, pulled together nicely. The jokes weren't over the top nor were they extremely memorable, but they fit the plot better than some of the jokes in the movie itself.

Okay, I'm going to bury this one here. In this unmarked grave. And I'll be back tomorrow with another treat for your Hallowe'en displeasure.

Day 338

movie: Demonic Toys
starring: Tracy Scoggins,Daniel Cerny
genre: Horror, Sci-fi
year: 1992
format: DVD

plot: A cop chases a suspect into a warehouse, only to find out that a demonic presence has taken over the toys and has intentions of possessing her unborn baby.

This is one of those straight to video movies that starts off really seeming more like a cop drama, then switches gears into a typical satanic ritual film. 
The acting is actual better then expected, this might be due to the fact this was during the age of soap stars who did B-movies. Compared to some of the stuff that has come out in the last few years in the name of B-movie-dom, this stands head and shoulders above.
The dolls are creepy, and witty with their one liners.

Day 294

movie: Evil Bong

plot: A group of stoners buy a one of a kind bong, only to find out it is stealing their souls when they use it.

Twiztid and Insane Clown Posse are on the soundtrack, and Tim Thomerson (in character as Jack Deth from the Trancers movies)  and Phil Fondacaro have cameos. There are also cameos by many of the puppets from various Full Moon movies.

This is one of those really cheesy but so stupid it's funny films that have become cult classics that Full Moon is known for.
I have to admit, I got a wicked kick out of the cameo by Thomerson more then anything else.

There is little plot, the dialog is heavily peppered with the word "bro" and it's done like a stage play with limited space. This is meant to be a time waster, but it has it's moments. The horror is not really there, but the nudity is everywhere.

As a vampire movie, it used it's metaphor brilliantly.  The relaxation leads to pleasure, and with their guards down the zombied victims would be both easy prey, and their lifeforce would be heightened.

Over Coffee- July 16th

I was checking out a few new items on the Cineplex site, and saw they have a game or community or something, where you can leave your favourite quote from your favourite films.
I thought, brilliant!  But when I went to leave mine, it sent me to Facebook. 
I don't care for that. Just don't understand why everything on the damned planet needs to be connected to Facebook?

But, I still think the idea of having a favourite movie quote is a great thing. 

So here is one of my favourite movie quotes.

I also think the tagline from the movie trailer is brilliant "Jack Deth is back, and he's never even been here before"

150 Movies You Should Die Before You See

That is the title of this 2010 book by Steve Miller.  This is by far a great encyclopedia of some of the best of the worst.

Broken up into 15 chapters, this covers much of the last 70 years.  Each listing gives the title, year, director, producer, stars and writer.
It also has a bit of trivia and a star rating {in this case a thumbs down}

I will say this much, I don't understand why the author didn't give Full Moon it's own chapter, as many of the Full Moon films have found their way into this volume.   {and if you don't know of what films I'm referring to then shame on you!} 
I was also disappointed to find the the God-King of bad movies, ED D WOOD JR,  did not have his own chapter either. 

All in all, a great way to spend an hour and half and well worth the cash.  This is the type of book every film freak should have on hand.

Day 3

Movie: Pit and the Pendulum
Starring: Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs
Genre: Horror, Drama,
Year: 1991 {Rereleased in 2011}
Format: DVD

Plot: Set during the Spanish Inquisition, a priest uses his power of influence to strip a wealthy family of their money and desecrating the body of their ancestor.
A young couple in the village are caught up in the mob of people at the execution of one of the family members, with the wife Marie becoming the object of the priest's desire. He then imprisons her for being a witch.

Henriksen is one of the greatest actors around, and with just the tilt of his head can deliver a creepiness that stays with you for hours.
The film plays out in a bunch of ways exposing how desire and greed can over take anyone and that words of duress are sometimes more believable then actions.
 This film is an exercise in both fear and karma.

I am not sure if it was just where I have the re-released edition, but the production seemed a lot glossier then what I remembered other Full Moon films to have been.

What do I think I learned from this film?
Fear is a great motivation for everyone as is lust, making us agree sometimes to the worst. And that no matter how you dress them up, a straight man will do anything to get a woman naked.
