1955
Nosferatu stood in the kitchen of the little townhouse, the kettle boiling in a hard whistle as she looked through the steam at Loki. She couldn't believe the last few hours but, there he was in living proof that they had happened.
5 hours earlier...
"So talk. Tell me how we can defeat the covens and Edmund?" our heroine said to the god Mercury as they stood in the middle of Astrid's kitchen in 1976. The god tilted his head and smiled.
"Oh you can't. He's still going to be brought over to this reality by his devotees, and Grandpa Van Helsing is still going to find his coffin and hide it in his house and you lot are still going to end up battling him forty years from now. I just told you what you wanted to hear so you'd let me in the house without much bloodshed." the sandy-blonde haired god replied licking his lips. He tilted his chin slightly as he looked over at the banshee before halfway turning towards the window. "Seems like we've got more uninvited guests." he commented just as Bacchus made his way towards the house. Grabbing our heroine, Mercury shimmered the two of them off into thin air. When they appeared again, they were in the middle of nowhere, a large rock formation just to the left of them which seemed to stretch out for miles. "There, that's a little more private."
"What the shack!" our heroine ripped her arm out from his grasp. "What the hell is going on then? Where are we?"
"What's going on is that the universe is sort of out of balance right now. It's out of balance because Loki isn't around. You, sweetheart, might not realize it but, he was more than just the trickster god of shapeshifters." he gestured with his left hand out palm upward, bending at the knees slightly. "In fact, there is so much you haven't clued into yet. For instance, did you know you were supposed to have been Rolf's mate." Mercury nodded his eyes wide. "Oh yes. You were supposed to have been claimed by Rolf, in fact, you were supposed to have been sired by him. But, Bacchus knew that if that happened, you'd never have come into your vampiric side. So he did what he does and poof!" he clapped his hands together creating a thunderous sound. "Suddenly Dagan gets the urge to snap your back like a twig and swap bodily fluids with you. Boom instant soulmate. And you know as well as I do that good old Ripper was nothing but your soulmate. Bacchus knew it, was counting on you two getting super close super quick. Because he knew about the big bad Frankenstein family curse. Only two children a generation. Knew that if you were sired by Dagan, knew that if you were Frankenstein by bloodline, you really wouldn't be much good to Loki in the grande scheme of things given Loki needed you to be the mother goddess for his Lycanthropes." he took a step to her right turning to look out over the large rock formation before levitating a few feet above the ground. He looked down at her then, the brim of his page-boy cap casting shadows across his face. Mercury landing silently on his feet as he continued to walk around Nosferatu in tight circles making her dizzy. "Bacchus didn't kill Loki by the way. I know you think he did, but he didn't. As much as Bacchus might be pissed off at Loki for getting to you first, he loves him too much to do anything that drastic." his British accent heavy with the last sentence, his grey-blue eyes sparkling.
"Then who did?" our heroine was standing still now, her head down as she forced herself to stop watching the god as he danced around her making her feel lightheaded. His dark trenchcoat floating around him like it had a life of it's own.
"What kill him? No one. You'd have felt it if he were dead. The covens have him. Tucked away somewhere." he gestured again to the large rock formation as it seemed like it was rising out of the ground some more. "Now, there are some more blah blah blahs we can rehash, but I don't have the time or patience to do that so let's get to the point. With Loki gone, I need you to step up to the plate." he raised his right hand palm facing her, head down in honesty. "You can feel that can't you? The rushing of electric jolts in your veins as of late." he waggled a finger at her before grabbing her arm and tracing the veins in her wrist. "It's what you were designed to do. To be! A god. It's why you were created by both them. Now, you have a choice, you can either take Loki's place. Answering people's prayers, rituals and summons or..." he trailed off dropping her arm roughly. "Or you can help me rescue him." Mercury leaned in slightly towards her, his hands now clasped behind his back. "But, if you decide to take his place, you need to be able to shift. And you know the only way a shapeshifter can shift is to have their soul. So you'd need to take your soul back from the safety deposit box that is Rolf; which would leave him vulnerable to Odin. Not too mention you'd be all claimable again. And wouldn't that be a bit of a pickle given you technically have two mates in two different realities in Edric and Reuben." he licked his lips again as he stared at her chest. "So...what do you say? You wanna be a full on god...I mean you're going to be downline anyways...this would just speed it up by about a thousand years or...do you want to play knight in shinning armor?"
They fell through the portal landing hard in the middle of the street. Our heroine breathing heavy gasping for air, covered in dried blood from having fought both the amazon guards and the few coven members who had been holding Loki captive. Mercury was nowhere to be found. She felt something crack as she realized the full weight of Loki's unconscious body was laying across her leg. She didn't think she'd ever get the image out of her mind. Loki had been chained to the cave wall, half his body a skeleton. He reminded her of the character Two Face from the Batman movies, his jaw exposed, his one eye half out of the socket, his right shoulder nothing more than bones. His left side wasn't much better, only he'd begun at some point to shift. His left ear pointed like a wolf's but more gristle than flesh, his fangs exposed, his muzzle half formed like a stub, his left arm nothing but a paw to the elbow and scales like a reptile from the elbow to shoulder. Our heroine felt her bones re-align when the weight was lifted off her. Mercury had appeared and grabbed Loki as if he were nothing, hauling him over his shoulder and nodded in the direction of the townhouse. It took Nosferatu another long pause to be able to stand when she realized from the look of the neighbourhood cars, that they were in the 1950's. It seemed, she still could only time travel in reverse.
Loki lay on the sofa his body no longer a mismatched mess. He thought he'd been hallucinating again when he'd first seen her there in the cave. Something the god had done for how long? He wasn't even sure at this point, a decade or a month or a century? This time when he'd seen our heroine's face, felt her touch, heard her voice she did something different. She told him "I've got you." In the past whenever the hallucination had recused him, she'd had some quick witted remark about video tapes and old slasher movies. But, when Loki heard her this time, he knew deep down in his core that she was real. And with the last tendril of fading powers he could gather, he read her mind enough to remember how she viewed him. Saw himself through her eyes and shapeshifted to her ideal of him. Or at lest he thought he had.
Nosferatu stared at the god from the edge of the kitchen as she poured the tea. The pain he must have been in she thought? Depending on what reality you were in, Loki had been gone anywhere from a few months to a few centuries. She shivered as she thought about how much damage the guards had done to him. How he'd been locked up behind those bars of magick like being in a prison cell no bigger than a cardboard box. It brought back memories of her own captivity in the well. Walking across the length of the house, she placed the tea on the small table by the corner of the sofa; her slim pale hand hovering just above Loki's face. She desperately wanted to move his hair out of his eyes, to pluck the leaves that were still clinging to it's tangled dark knots. When the god shapeshifted into what he thought was his old self, he accidentally created a hairdo that was shoulder length and half filled with leaves. His brown eyes fluttered open halfway as he reached for her hand taking it. "I always knew it would be you." The words were never formed by the god's lips, but still managed to pass between them telepathically. Our heroine didn't scream, didn't pull away when Loki's fangs bit deep into the soft flesh of her palm. Just like when he'd rescued her from the well and allowed her to drink his blood, the time had come to complete the circuit.
"Uhmm." Mercury cleared his throat causing our heroine to jump. She blushed as she realized their very intimate moment had been witnessed. "I need to talk to you over here." he gestured for her to move away from the edge of the sofa, from Loki. "There's something I don't think you're aware of. You don't need your soul to be claimed by...a god. So before you go any farther with this blood exchange..."
"Too late." Loki said as he stood on very shaky legs. Mercury glanced at the other god sideways, his eyebrows knitted together in puzzlement. "She's been mine for a very long time. I've just never needed to announce it before now." Loki nodded towards her, his hair suddenly clean of the leaves as he ran his hand through it combing it back from his face. Mercury shook his head slightly in disbelief as he brought his hand up to Nosferatu's. He swore as he pulled his burnt fingertips away from the female.

Bacchus's Day Off
Spring 2020
The sandy haired god shimmered into the parking lot. Glaring around at the faceless sheep before him, he let out a deep breath of disgust. It was training day for the company and he couldn't think of a better way to lay off some steam. Slowly he walked through the patches of crowded people scattered like forgotten weeds in the middle of some unkept garden. He hated it there. The smells of sweat and heat and cheep everything else invading his nostrils like rotten sewage backed up on a hot day. The sound of his shoes crunching on the ground was almost soothing in it's rhythmic patterns. Squish squash squish squash crunch crunch squish squash crunch. The door to the back of the building creaked as he grabbed hold, feeling the metal bend in his fingers. He hadn't even meant to, but the god was so into his own thoughts. First thing first, he needed to find the man who he was being today. That wrestler dude from Detroit. Bacchus had always wondered if he'd just taken the image of the dark haired one instead of Loki that day when they'd probed Nosferatu's mind; would she have been his by now? Would the last decade have even happened if he'd just sussed out which one of the tag team she liked more? Probably not. The god had to shake his head as he scanned the darkly lit locker room. Seeing his prey he snapped his fingers as everyone else in the room fainted into oblivion. Tapping the wrestler on the shoulder, Bacchus didn't wait for him to even turn around, he just waved his palm in front of the guy's ear and watched him shimmer into thin air. The dude would wake up in the cinema reality stuck watching a marathon of some horrible sci-fi movies. At lest 20 hours of bad nerdom that would have the dude mindlessly employed. Bacchus sent him there frequently when he needed to shapeshift into him in this particular reality. Sighing, the god opened the wrestler's locker to see the outfit waiting for him there. "Shack." He pulled the mask over his face a few minutes later as he headed out to the ring in the red and blue costume. He couldn't see properly through the mask as it kept slipping down. Running to the edge of the ring, Bacchus sprang up as if on a trampoline and hurled himself halfway across the ring to land mid-center on one knee. Spinning, he slithered out of the opposite side landing on his toes before grabbing hold of the rope and propelling himself back into the ring with a triple corkscrew. The crowd stood screaming for more. The god smiled to himself under the cartoon's mask, as he played along giving them the character's trademark fingers to the skull to impact his character's name. He did however, love the adrenaline rush that this reality provided. The bell sounded indicating the match was officially underway. Scanning the layout of the arena, he spotted three cameras indicating this was being taped. That gave the god a second boost of the giggles, knowing that while people watched at home thinking it was their favourite wrestler under this mask, he was really the one. Really the one doing the flips and spins and moves that seemed to defy gravity. They were not just witnessing greatness but an actual god. Over the centuries Bacchus had been so many things to so many people in countless realities, but being this wrestler in this reality always had him returning. No; he thought. No, he was glad he'd chosen this one of the two that day when he'd entered Nosferatu's mind raiding her memories. This image, this man she respected and admired for over a decade was the perfect fit. Bacchus rammed his knee into the neck of his opponent as he watched him stumble backwards a few steps arms flaying around before hitting the rope and sliding to his knees hard. Bacchus turned towards the far rope running at a speed too fast to be considered human but too slow for the god; using it to propel himself across the ring once more to land a perfectly timed low drop kick to the opponent's jaw. Bacchus hung there in midair for a long hesitation before allowing himself to fall onto his ass. He then sprang back up from a flat position flying over the opponent, landing on the top turnbuckle, and diving down on the opponent's chest in a backwards frogsplash. Pulling the opponent back up to a semi-standing position, he delivered a hard chop across the collarbone, causing the opponent to rock and bounce off the ropes once more. Grabbing him by the wrist, Bacchus used the age old Irish-Whip to send the almost unconscious opponent two steps and watched him fall flat. He forgot for a brief second that he was wearing the costume. That the dude he'd shapeshifted into was suppose to be playing a completely different wrestler for this match, as he lifted the opponent up and gave him the dude's trademark move. The cradle-shock. He wasn't even breathing heavy yet as the ref leaned down and told him he needed to cut the match as they were already at the time limit. Nodding, the god pinned his opponent. His arm raised in the win. The character's theme music sprang to life through the speakers of the building as the crowd cheered and clapped. Quickly the sandy-haired blue eyed god made his way back to the locker room, removed the mask and headed to the shower.
He sat in the little cafeteria not more than an hour later, rolling a paper cup steaming with coffee between his palms. It wasn't enough. Shapeshifting constantly into others to create his art, being onstage performing to the love and adore of humans. None of them ever knowing that he was more than what they thought they saw. More than the rock stars they'd loved back in the previous three decades, more than the painters they both scorned and worshiped for the last four hundred years, more than the movie stars or tv heroes that had sprung up in the last fifty years that they threw themselves at. Bacchus had let himself become complacent with the scraps of pop-culture stardom. Had let himself be forgotten along side the other gods. Letting out a deep sigh, Bacchus snapped his fingers once more as the wrestler was returned to the locker room unaware of what had happened, as the god shimmered into thin air.
His back stiffened as he shimmered back into view in front of the house. There was a faint scent of a protection spell. Snorting, Bacchus squinted up his eyes running a palm across the fringe of bangs still flopping over his eyebrows. The wrestler needed a haircut he thought as he shook his head wildly. The too long shaggy do the wrestler favoured suddenly became an inch shorter allowing the god the relief from the itchiness of the long scruff always had against his neck. He walked a few feet towards the house, stopping for a half heartbeat before rolling his eyes and continuing on. Astrid's grandmother had been a very powerful seer, but Astrid was still too young to have the kind of power her spells needed to keep the god out. Bacchus entered the house letting the door slam against the wall in a single huff as he did. Snapping his fingers, both Edric and Seward fainted on the spot into a deep sleep just as he entered the kitchen to see Mercury shimmer off with Nosferatu. Swearing, Bacchus tilted his head deciding to return to the other reality for another match.

2020 March FoodnFlix dish
Spudguns!, it's been a wacky month to say the lest. I hosted Foodn'Flix once again this month, and my selection wasn't just one movie, but a genre of movies. I asked everyone joining in to pick their favourite Tim Burton film.
Now, my original plan was to do a dish for at lest three films, but with the zombie apocalypse isolation situation shopping panic; well I was lucky to get one done. Shelves have been pretty empty around my city.
I ended up doing it backwards because of the shopping issues. I was able to find some tofu at the store, and tried to think what I could make with it. That's when I remembered a subplot in the 2012 Tim Burton/Johnny Depp film Dark Shadows. They owned a fishing cannery.
I've covered this film in the first year of this blog (Day 281) but for anyone who hasn't seen it here's a brief summary.
plot: After rejecting his lover Angelique, who is a witch, Barnabas Collins, has a curse placed on him and his family. He is then turned into a vampire by Angelique and is locked in a coffin and buried for 200 years. When Barnabas is released by accident in the 1970's, he returns to his family home to find that the few remaining family members are still living under a form of the curse, and that Angelique has taken over the town. The two immortals end up in a battle of wills as each tries to gain control of the small fishing town they live in.
Notes: fish, pumpkins, pineapple, whiskey, ketchup, pot roast, carrots, potatoes, wine, salad, pop, McDonalds, milkshakes, pie, pizza (sign) grapes, waffles, cereal, syrup, juice, strawberries, coffee, sugar, milk, cherries, beer, melon, oranges, bread/buns, tomato juice, bacon, blueberries, mustard, crab (ghostly vision) canned seafood
Even though, there are a bunch of scenes where the family are eating, you don't see a lot of closeups of the food. But, as I said, the situation we are currently in, caused me to work this backwards. I ended up making a Mock Fish (tofu) and Chips.
Ingredients
1 egg
1 cups breadcrumbs
1/2 package of tofu
2 medium or 1 large potato
seasoning of your choice
I started by chopping the potatoes into large strips. I ended up keeping the skins on, and having a thicker cut. I then seasoned with salt, pepper, and a spiced seasoning mix. Then placed them in the oven for half an hour on 350 degrees.
While that was in the oven, I drained and sliced my tofu before dredging it through the egg and breadcrumbs.
I then deep fried the tofu, carefully turning it every few minutes, for close to twenty minutes, before placing it in the oven to finish cooking for another half hour.
At this point, I switched out the fries from the oven and finished them off in the deep fryer.
After draining everything, I decided to add a basic bagged coleslaw of carrots, red cabbage and green cabbage. I tossed this with a simple dressing of Miracle Whip, vinegar and ground black pepper.
I am surprised how well this ended up fitting together. It's not the way I had hoped to go with this month's movie selections, but in the end it worked nicely. Okay, I'll be back at the end of the month with the group round up.

The Nosferatu Adventures
page 351, chapter 351
1976
"You're pacing." Edric said coldly.
"I'm pissed off." our heroine snarled as she continued to walk in a tight circle in the little room. Her hands on her hips, her eyes cast down as she felt her double row of fangs threatening to break through her gums. The banshee cast a half glance down the hallway at the direction the voice was coming from. Astrid had found the little trio sitting in the middle of a Robin's and told them she knew who they were. Nosferatu now snorted as she heard the sound of the woman's muffled voice as she whispered to someone.
"Come on, take a chill already. So this chick knew we portalled. So, she's a witch." the male hybrid continued as he tapped his fingers on his knee.
"She's no witch." the pale female spat as she pointed towards the hallway. "She's a Librarian." she continued to move around the room like a caged animal.
"And?" Edric shrugged as he nodded towards Seward who'd been in the back area of the room, pressing his palms tight to the walls looking for what he was sure was a hidden door.
"As in magick mirror dumbass." our heroine growled. It was all she could do not to rip through the walls. Ever since they'd landed back in this decade, something had been nudging at our heroine's nerves. For a reality that wasn't suppose to have much, if any magick, she was sure she could feel it tightening around her. Something she just couldn't put her finger on.
"Again I say and?"
"Uh magick mirror? Do you think I could get a message to Landin then?" Seward asked as he continued to knock on the wall near the window looking for a soft spot.
"I don't know?" our heroine said her fingers now at her shoulders and neck. "Your cousin seems to think he's so upper class." she hissed in frustration.
"You say that like it's a bad thing." Edric snorted, sighing loudly. The male hybrid crossed his ankle over his knee before uncrossing them and propelling himself out of the chair he'd been sitting in. Since they had entered Astrid's home, Edric's senses had been on fire with some unknown scent. The banshee-werewolf hybrid was down the hallway in a half a breath his overly sensitive nose leading him to the source of the irritant. It wasn't until he found himself standing in the basement did he realize that the smells were coming from hair products. Astrid was a hairdresser. It was the chemicals from her perming solutions and dyes that were causing him issues. Sitting down in the salon chair, the male let out another sigh as he twirled the chair around before staring at his reflection in the work mirror. Bringing his right hand up to his chin, Edric raised an eyebrow thinking it was time for a new look.
Meanwhile...
The male looked down from the building's roof towards the street below him. Fresh painted had just been added to the asphalt in course yellow lines. One long run-on line that looked more like morse code than directions. Waving his hand he watched as the yellow stretches directly below him disappeared then reappeared in the form of an x. He giggled to no one as he jumped. The dark trenchcoat he'd stolen from the store in London blew out behind him like a cape, as he landed on his feet. Mercury stuffed his hands into the pockets of his dark jeans and continued on down the street at a human's pace. The god whistled as he stopped at the nearest store window seeing a display of hats. He'd always favoured the page-boy style, and grabbed one in tweed. No sooner had he plopped it on, when a voice screamed at him that he couldn't do that. Smirking, the sandy blonde male continued on his path.
"Sorry officer. Can't stay and chat. I'm late for a very important date." Mercury tossed the words over his shoulder in a crisp British accent at the police officer as he staggered from his car. The cop followed him around the corner of a building but lost him as the god had already shimmered into thin air.
He stood outside under a lamp post waiting. The god knew he wouldn't have long to wait, knew all he needed to do was pop into the room. He simply wanted to wait to the last possible second, to have his timing on the dot in order to express the most dramatic affect. Shimmering now would kill the mood. Mercury toyed with the idea of just letting the female make her own choice without all the information. Toyed with the briefest of hesitations before shrugging off the idea. He walked silently from the end of the street towards the house with the lilacs in the garden. Walked smoothly across the wet grass that had been watered too much to the point it was squishy and not at all soaked in. Walked up the two stairs to the porch, opened the front door and just let himself in. Edric was standing in front of him before the front door even closed, his nails sharp, his fangs exposed. "No need for that." Mercury said snapping his fingers, sending the male hybrid across the room. "Sit. Good boy."
"Who the hell are you?" Astrid asked grabbing a hockey stick that had been sitting discarded near the kitchen door.
"I need to borrow Nosferatu." he nodded smiling. "I've got a message or two for her." he ran the palm of his hand across the length of the hallway, exposing a small wave of blue light. "Here's my card." he replied too casually as a small white business style card appeared out of thin air.
"Mercury." our heroine's voice broke the tension from a few feet behind Astrid. "Why are you here?"
"Hello lovely. Been a few years. Well, centuries actually. I do believe it was just outside of Wallachia in the 1400's when I saw you last. How is Vlad?" he tilted his head to the side the brim of the hat casting shadows across his face.
"Again why are you here?" she crossed her arms under her chest giving her boobs a lift.
"In this reality or Thunder Bay?" he continued to smile, his roundish face warm as his grey-blue eyes shone. "Short answer, it's Thunder Bay and you're here in this reality." Mercury cast a glance around the little house. "We need to talk and we should do so before you let Edmund through the portal. Unless you want to repeat what happens in forty years with the Van Helsing house."

13 Days of Hallowe'en 2019 Day 6
Day 6
movie: Saturday the 14th
starring: Richard Benjamin, Jeffrey Tambor
genre: Comedy
year: 1981
format: TV Edit
plot: A family moves into the estate house left to them in their aunt's will. Unknown to them, the house is haunted, and contains a very powerful book that the children unwittingly use to unleash a bunch of monsters.
Okay, so it's plot sounds a bit like some of the horror spoofs that popped up the last decade as well as elements of Elvira Mistress of the Dark. And I have to say, this was a long arse waste of time. It was not funny, it did not have a clear storyline at all, the limited use of the mythos it was trying to create got muddled within itself and just seemed to fall over it's own feet.
You have two vampires who want the house for themselves, and try to buy it from the owners only to be turned down. Then instead of doing what anyone would expect them to, which is kill the owners and take the house or at the very lest hypnotize the owners into giving it to them; the vampires just wait. Literally, they just sit in their car in the driveway and wait for the owners to leave. It's not till half way through that you learn it's the book hidden in the house they really want. As well, you learn the vampires can enter the house without any issues, so that plot point is really thin. The movie's big ending centers around everyone being trapped in the house with a monster hunter who spoiler alert, turns out to be the bad guy.
Granted this was from the beginning of the 80's, but the plot feels like it was meant for a bad Saturday morning cartoon - no pun intended on the name. It just left me scratching my head the whole time trying to figure out if the writers/producers were on crack at the time?
If you're a fan of either Monster Squad from 1987 or Elvira Mistress of the Dark from 1988, you would have to admit, both those movies took the two main storylines and did them 100% better. Clearer. Funnier. Smarter.
I'm going to bury this here in this unmarked grave. I'll be back tomorrow with another treat for your Hallowe'en displeasure.

13 Days of Hallowe'en 2019 Day 5
Day 5
movie: Rockabilly Vampire
starring: Paul Stevenson, Margaret Lancaster
genre: Comedy,
year: 1996
format: TV Edit
plot: When an Elvis obsessed fan meets the man of her dreams, a dead ringer for Elvis, she finds out he's actually a vampire. The two have one shot at happiness, if they can break away from the vampire clan that owns him.
This is actually not a bad storyline going on here. It's a classic Troma film from a decade when independent films were truly that. Which in this case means, the sound pops in and out, but otherwise, it's got grit. It does feel more like it was meant to be a stage play than an actual film, but that might have more to do with the actors themselves as everyone to me, seemed uncomfortable in front of the camera.
So the main characters, Iris and Eddie, are both trapped in what they at first perceive to be their own version of dull lifeless hell. Iris is looking for that one chance to make her life more exciting, be it through her job, her novel, or a new relationship. Eddie, is just trying to keep his vampire nature locked away. Eddie was turned against his will by his brother, and is constantly trying to stay one step ahead of him. It's only when he meets Iris and stops running for awhile, that his brother finds him and starts to torment the people in their lives, going so far as to kill Iris's landlord.
From a vampire storyline, there really isn't anything new going on here, even given it was made over 20 years ago. You have the unwilling sensitive vampire character who just wants to be free of his sire, and fights his need to feed as much as possible. There is a scene where the two leads try to rob a blood bank but it goes horribly wrong. The fact the human character is the one who comes up with the plan is never brought into question. You would think a 65 year old vampire would already know how to successfully do this. From a romance storyline, again it's not really anything we haven't seen a million times over. It's got a very Romeo and Juliet vibe to it. Vampire falls in love with a human, and family/friends on both sides are against it. What I did find to be a bit of a fresh take on things, was that it brought in a subgenre/subculture that at the time (1996) was still finding it's foothold in the mainstream minds. That of the return to 50's music/style.
I was a little disappointed though with the fact they introduced the idea of a vodoun priest, but made his character nothing more than a con-artist. I would have liked to have seen more connection to that element in the film, as the set up for it was dropped really early on in the film.
Okay, I'm going to put a stake in this now, and I'll be back tomorrow with another treat for your Hallowe'en displeasure.

13 Days of Hallowe'en 2019 Day 4
Day4
movie: Vamperifica
starring: Martin Yurkovic, Jeff Ward
genre: Comedy, Musical
year; 2012
format; TV Edit
plot: When a college student is turned into a vampire, he not only begins to get the life he's always wanted, but learns that he's the reincarnated King of the Vampires.
I have to admit, if I had known it was a musical I would have passed on it, but I actually thought this one was pretty good despite that factor. The story of a vampire king/vampire queen has been done before but this movie managed to make it seem like it was fresher than that.
I think what I really dug about this is that it went back to the roots of vampires as metaphors for other issues. Here we are given a hero who's not your typical hero or for that matter anti-hero. He's a gay character who has a dream of starring as the lead in a play and is fiercely loyal to his friends. When his best friend is raped, he takes action. There is actually a metaphor acting as another metaphor here. The lead character of Carmen has been told repeatedly that he could never be the leading man in the play, that he's not up to standards as a singer, and that his dreams are never going to come true. Then he becomes a vampire, and is suddenly dealing with everyone telling him the opposite. That he's this super powerful king. The character has to learn how to be the lead of his own life while balancing it with the popularity that's suddenly come with it and the responsibility; as he's torn between his friends and this new gang of vampires pulling him in two directions.
You've got being the outsider, being orphaned, peer-pressure, bullying, rape, loyalty, following your heart, growing up and letting go of old hurts. All in all the elements make for a really well rounded story that deals with some very serious issues. I just wish there was a little more story. You almost get the feeling this was meant as a first part of a series.
I'm going to stick a stake into this here, and will be back tomorrow with some more treats for your Hallowe'en displeasure.

13 Days of Hallowe'en 2019 Day 3
Day 3
movie: Dead Cert
starring: Janet Montgomery, Steven Berkoff
genre: Crime, Action
year: 2010
format: TV Edit
plot: A club owner makes a bet with a drug lord named The Wolf, and loses his club. Before long, a vampire hunter arrives and informs him that the drug lord is really one of the most powerful vampires in the world.
I've seen more vampire movies than most, and have to say this was decent enough. The baseline is good, a small time underground fighter turned businessman gets conned by a mobster into giving up his property, only to find out these mobsters are centuries old vampires. It's very much in the same vein as From Dusk Till Dawn. The idea of using a strip club as a vampire front is even older than Dusk was,(Vamp, To Sleep with a Vampire) but it's a plot device that works. It makes sense and fits the metaphor of it being a feeding ground for all sorts of desires.
There's a few things going on here, from the idea of an old fashioned turf war, to what's the braking point for loyalty. I liked the fact there is a strong Renfield element going on for both sides of the story with the one club employee who betrays everyone,(sells out to Wolf) and the one who stands firm till the end. (stays with Cert)
There's this semi-inside joke with the naming of the strip club going from "Paradise" when Cert first opens it to "Inferno" after Wolf takes control. In fact, they emphasis this with a short scene where the heroes try to collect their broken sign after the club has been taken. I saw that as being a nod to the fact everything can shift so quickly from good to bad or bad to good. The place itself is neutral grounds, holy to both men for very different reasons. It comes down to the main idea that each of them - The Wolf and Cert- are doing their best to protect their "homes and family" at all costs.
I'm going to bury this one here, under this tombstone and I'll be back tomorrow with some more treats for your Hallowe'en displeasure.

The Nosferatu Adventures s13 p20
The Nosferatu Adventures
page 350, chapter 350
1976
Astrid slid out of the bed as carefully as she could not wanting to wake Bart...Bert...Ben? Didn't matter, she had no intention of seeing him again. She needed to get home, the babysitter was only suppose to stay till midnight and it was almost 1am. Grabbing the white slacks from the floor she kept her head down avoiding the thin scarf she had insisted he use to cover the mirror. Finding her boots she tiptoed her way through the house avoiding the other two mirrors in the hallway as well. She didn't breathe until she was outside, her back flat against the door, her boots still in one hand, her purse and slacks in the other. Quickly she got dressed on the porch before realizing she left the scarf. "Shack. What am I going to do about my hair?" she shrugged to herself as she started to head towards the center of town. She hadn't had much time to herself since the baby had been born. Single mom having to work two jobs just to keep up, it didn't help any that since her grandmother died last year, the job of Librarian had become hers. Astrid hated mirrors now, and almost never used them to see herself. Her grandmother had told her not too worry about that, that only the one in the sewing room was magick, but none the less, the very idea that at any moment the white fog might activate any random mirror freaked her out. Remembering that they were out of milk, she crossed through the park heading towards the 24 hour grocery. And that's when see saw them. Three figures moving across the park, like an overexposed negative. Two men and a woman walked out of thin air. Only it wasn't anymore, there was a swirling mass behind them in the middle of the park. Shaking her head, Astrid cleared the vision away. But only for the briefest of seconds before it seemed to pick up again. But now they were no longer walking, they were sitting in the middle of a coffee shop huddled together, the tall thin male seeming very distressed. "Why am I seeing this now?" she asked herself as she cautiously moved closer to the spot. Putting her palms up, she felt the heat coming from where the vision had taken place. "Still warm like an oven after making bread." she whispered, her eyes wide. "So it hasn't been long less than an hour." she calculated that meant they must be close still. "Why now? Why here? Think girl what planets are doing what? Are we close to a solstice? What would cause..." she spotted a young couple heading towards her holding hands, the guy in faded bellbottom jeans no shoes, his chest exposed with his brown jacket open. The girl wearing the shortest pink and purple mini skirt Astrid had ever seen, and a fringed white top. Ducking her head Astrid blushed as she realized she had been not just talking to herself but talking out loud. Moving on through the park she made her way to the grocery; the smell of wet dog so overpowering she had to cover her mouth and nose. The mocha skinned twenty-three year old woman stopped suddenly as a rush of dizziness caused her to feel faint, forcing her to lean on the edge of the newspaper rack. Moving her hand then to her throat she froze in panic. Her had wasn't her own but that of an extremely pale person. She blinked trying to clear her head telling herself it was the vision still playing mind games with her. But when she did, she saw the two males sitting beside her at a coffee shop. Astrid was suddenly there, in the smoky building listening to the people around them, listening to the two males argue and plot, the voice of the one to her right so much louder that she needed to cover her ears, the smell of wet dog so heavy she wanted to gag. Then Astrid was back in her own body, standing in the 24 hour grocery no one but herself and the teenaged checkout clerk.
When she got home fifteen minutes later, Astrid paid the babysitter and headed for her grandmother's sewing room. Removing the white sheet she had placed over the mirror before leaving for the night, she let out a deep breath. The familiar sight of the other side of the mirror was both comforting and frightening as Edmund Gaerwn looked up from the large spellbook he was studying. "Astrid?" he closed the book still leaning on the table. "Is there something the matter?"
"I'm not sure? I was out just now and ...a portal opened up. Three people came through." she raised her hand palm towards the mirror. "Now before you say anything, I saw it in a vision. It had already happened, but I'm guessing it happened near where I was. Two of them were not human."
"What were they?" Edmund asked as he stood straight his piercing blue eyes demanding.
"My best guess, wolf. The smell of wet dog was unmistakable."
"Are you sure? Lycanthropes can not open portals. They would have needed an extremely powerful witch or a...banshee." a seductive smile crossed his lips. "Find them. Bring them there to the mirror I need to see them, to speak to them."

Inspired By Sept 28th 2019
Spudguns!, I've got another dish for you inspired by challenge. Once again, I joined up with my friend Heather from All Roads Lead to the Kitchen, for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the tv series) inspired post.
With seven seasons of the show to pull from, I had fun having a mini BtVS marathon, and of course, there are two food centered episodes - Pangs (season 4 episode 8) and Double Meat Palace (season 6 episode 12) that popped into my mind right away. In Pangs, Buffy is feeling homesick on Thanksgiving, and decides to take the role of making a family dinner for everyone. In Double Meat Palace, Buffy finds herself needing to get a job and ends up working in the fast food place.
Notes for Pangs: hot dogs on a stick (mentioned) corn (mentioned), pie, cow, chocolate (print), yams (mentioned) roast turkey, pop, chips, jam, canned food, cereal, bread, carrots, stuffing, cranberries, celery, red peppers, potatoes, wine, spices, whipped cream, salt, pepper, coffee, fries, ketchup, mustard, frozen peas, green beans, squash, sage, onions, butter, brandy, condensed milk, gravy, brown sugar
Notes for Double Meat Palace: popcorn, burgers, pop, fries, shakes, cow, chicken, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, buns, onion rings, pickles, mustard, ketchup, sauce, chicken nuggets, coffee, pie, ice cream, cherries (print) lemonade, potluck (mentioned) turkey (mentioned) tea, cookies, nuts (mentioned)
But, I was drawn to my favourite episode Lover's Walk (season 3 episode 8) and a line spoken by Spike. In Lover's Walk, Willow is trying to make an anti-love spell in order to keep her and Xander's feelings at bay. But when Spike returns to town heartbroken over his own breakup, he kidnaps them both forcing Willow to create a major love spell so he can win his true love back.
Notes for Lover's Walk: vodka, bourbon, beer, pez candy, coffee, nuts, spices, popcorn, salt, pepper, water, herbs, tea, cereal, flour, hot chocolate, marshmallows (mentioned) peaches (mentioned) cloves (mentioned) candy machines (in background) baby food (mentioned) muffins, juice, pop, cheesecake, peas, potatoes, pudding
There is a scene where Spike is crying to Willow and says "A Chaos demon. Have you ever seen a Chaos demon, they're all slime and antlers." This has been one of my all time favourite lines from the entire series, so of course I had to try to do something that would represent it. What I ended up doing was a version of a cake I've seen on Food Network Canada website. The Poke Cake. Only, I made cupcakes. Why am I calling it a dish and not a recipe? Because I used a cheat through the whole thing, with cake mix, store bought frosting, store bought pudding and pretzles. So really can not call it a recipe.
I followed the directions on the box, and divided it into a muffin tin. While that was in the oven, I mixed some vanilla pudding with green food colouring.
As the cupcakes cooled, I then went ahead and mixed together the white frosting with red food colouring. Once the cupcakes were cool enough to handle, I dug a small well in the center of each, filling it with the green pudding and replacing the dug out pieces.
I then frosted them with the now red/pink frosting. From here, I simply stuck a few pieces of the pretzels into the tops, and poured a bit more of the green pudding over that.
This was intended to represent the "slime and antlers" that inspired the whole idea. The intention of the poke cake, is that because you've "poked holes" into it and filled it, that when you bite into it, the cupcake should ooze. Sadly, I didn't have enough filling, so mine just sort of clumped.
Delicious in it's sticky gory-glory. That's all I've got this time for you, don't forget to head over to All Roads Lead to the Kitchen, and see which episode inspired Heather. Till late.

Jacob's Daze
1400's
He grunted as he raised the axe, splitting the wood sending shards of it flying. he was angry, adrenaline pumping as he tried not to think. He'd been angry since he'd woken up that morning and there had been no reason for it. Sweat beaded on the werewolf's flesh, leaving a ring at the waist of his pants. His ears twitched as he heard the laughter. They were miles away still, three of the local whores come to keep Vlad's men company. Sniffing shallowly, he wiped his hand over his mouth. They smelled good, sweet in their perfumed clothes, carrying baskets of fresh berries, fruit and wine. To Jacob that smelled even better than they did. But he just didn't want to smell it. Didn't want to know how the tang of sweat and perfume would sit on the edge of his very sensitive nose for the next few hours. His stomach rumbled as he stopped his task long enough to watch the three women marching arrogantly through the trees. Their feet crunching carelessly on fallen branches. Each footfall an insult to the forest. Jacob's gaze fell across each before settling on a crushed leaf. The green colour bursting like a waterfall. Something wasn't right here. Bringing his hand up to his face, the lycanthrope hid behind his palm as he sniffed deeply closing his blue eyes. It was like a spell gone wrong as it burst around him, slithering across his back and shoulders. He felt as if he were being hugged by a bear, the tightness making him feel the need to rotate his shoulders a few times to assure himself he could move. His senses overloaded with the taste of magick which seemed to be like eating burnt leaves. A horrible reminder that the full moon was that night. Since Rolf and Reuben had returned to their own time, Jacob once again took his place as Oaken pack alpha. And with having to share space now with not just the Blacksmith pack but the Copperheads and the Millersons, he was simply dreading this full moon. It would; he was more than sure, be a nightmare of a bloodbath. Now, this tinge of whatever magick he was sensing was not welcome. The tall jet black haired male magick misted a clean crisp shirt as he bent to gather his firewood. He sat a few hours later by the edge of the camp having had no stomach for the dinner, a familiar feeling beginning to creep over him. The sun was less than an hour from setting, and the packs were already beginning to get restless, each holding territory nearby. Jacob stretched grunting in pain. Something was different tonight, something tugging at him causing every muscle in the shapeshifter to ache and burn. Had been all day. The dark haired male decided not to wait for nightfall as he got up from his seat and walked into the woods. Letting the magick mist surround him, his clothes and boots disappeared leaving him naked as he knelt on all fours. His bones shifted and cracked as he screamed in agony. His voice going from human to nothing more than animalistic gurgles before a howl escaped his throat. He hadn't felt this much torture shifting to his wolf form since he was a kid, since the first time he turned. Panting, the large onyx wolf shook himself before heading off at a run. The werewolf crossed nearly twenty miles within minutes as he ran deeper into the forest. Something driving him to test his own speed. Stopping at the edge of a lake, he dipped his muzzle into it lapping the cool water. He was thirsty. Good old fashioned thirst from running so long at such a speed. He let his mind drift then to the simple task of quieting that need, when he caught a scent. Turning his eyes up the beast peered across the lake's surface. He stopped drinking jerking his head up to get a better look. There less than a mile away on the far side of the lake was the Banshee.
"Jacob." he heard her whisper as she stood still her pulse quickening. The onyx wolf raised his face to the sky, one front paw raised as if about to take a step. He hesitated before lowering his muzzle once more to return to the cold water. His amber-grey eyes never breaking contact with Nosferatu's. He then crossed the length of the water in a half heartbeat, without even wanting to. The creature stopped once again distracted for a half a breath by a large trout swimming against the current. Snarling before letting a yelp escape him, the wolf continued to concentrate on the fish. Pouncing his powerful jaws clamped down on the fish as he proudly showed off his prize. His animal mind telling him he needed to prove he could do it without failure. Jacob moved onward to where our heroine was still standing, her skirt hiked up around her thighs as to not get too wet, her bare legs under the water. The wolf past the female dropping the large fish on the edge of the bank before snorting at her. He transformed back to his human self just as the sky began to become rust orange. The sun starting to set.
"How did you know it was me?" he asked breathless. It was all he could do not to count the beats of her heart as he tried to still his own breath. The female shrugged clearing her throat as she tried not to stare at the still naked man. Jacob smelled the banshee's body chemistry change as she blushed.
"Just something I've always been able to do." She walked towards him splashing water as she did, the waterline getting closer and closer to her ankles, revealing just how pale she was. "Well I was hoping to be at the castle before anyone found me. Should I run?" the male's gaze was drawn then to a large scar on the hybrid's right leg. He was reminded that in her time such injuries were no longer life threatening to humans. Remembered her telling him about how surgeries to repair broken bones were common place. Reminded that she'd once been human.
"Please do not." Jacob closed his eyes running his fingers over his mouth. "Running will just set things off. Heartbeat the blood rushing which you already know yourself. And I am not sure I can resist with the moon so close to rising." opening his eyes he gave her a sideways glance. "I had no intention of..." he gestured towards her. "I'm already alpha and I have no problem fighting to keep it."
"That will not matter once the full moon is visible completely. All logic and rational thought or good intentions are gone." our heroine said her tone low. "Trust me. I have been through it before."
"If only there was a way to stop it." Jacob said still standing a few feet from her; still naked.
"There is." our heroine moved farther up towards the edge of the bank towards the trees. "Beating it to it. The very first time I witnessed the full moon ritual, I stopped it by choosing a mate." she breathed a deep sigh. "If I were to choose someone the ritual is stopped. Ended before it can begin." reaching her hand up to touch his neck her eyes flashed the pure white of the banshee. The air shifted around them carrying on it the heavy smell of wet dog. "Damn." she shook her head her eyes returning to their human hazel. "The other packs are coming. I have to go. Try not to get killed."
"Wait." Jacob's words were starting to slur as he reached out for her. His nails sharp glass like points, his bottom fangs already exposed. Grabbing her hand he brought it up to his face sniffing deeply. He trailed his nose up her arm to her elbow as he closed his eyes. Snarling Nosferatu tried to pull away but couldn't. "I think...I think it is too late." Jacob mumbled as he fought back a growl. Her scent was all he could comprehend. It just seemed to engulf him like a wool coat. Our heroine swore as she listened to the sounds of the approaching werewolves. At lest five heartbeats were closing in. Turning to look at the sky, she did indeed see the moon visible beside the still setting sun. She had two choices; either fight her way out of it getting killed in the process or give in letting one of the lycanthropes claim her. Taking a deep gulp of air, Nosferatu stopped struggling.
"Shack it! Jacob Oaken, I choose you." her voice was steady and solid as she tilted her chin so that she was talking to the wind as much as to the male beside her. The involuntary transformation seemed to stop cold leaving the male able to get some control over it and return to his human form. He pulled her to himself before toppling them both to the ground.
"You hear that?" he whispered a few moments later. "The packs they are gone." the strange feeling he'd had all day suddenly vanished. All the odd aches and pains suddenly gone, as if they'd never been. He stretched out beside her wiggling his toes. "I could get used to this." the dark haired lycanthrope said rolling back on top of his new mate, his arms raised over her skull as he flexed and unflexed his fingers kneading the dirt and grass around them. Reminding our heroine suddenly of a cat and not a wolf. "I feel great!" there was no hiding the joy and shock in his tone. The energy seemed to snake it's way up his spine flowing into his shoulders. "Can you feel that? Like the whole world is humming." his blue eyes seemed to actually glow as the last rays of sunlight gleamed in them. Our heroine said nothing as she examined him, tracing a nail through his hair. Nosferatu half expected to see the grey streaks appear at his temples but the didn't. Unlike when she'd claimed Reuben last time while she'd been pregnant, the Frankenstein curse seemed to have no effect on Jacob. "You do not look like you feel great. You look like you feel sad." he knitted his eyebrows together in worry. "I know you have been through this process before, but unlike your other mate, I am not that easily killed." Jacob nodded unable to keep the smirk off his face. "You already had my loyalty now you have got my body and my heart." he leaned in to kiss her but she turned her face.
"I do not want your heart. Save that for when I am gone and you fall in love." she said with a touch of venom to her voice. "You are right. I have been through this claiming process before. a half dozen times. And I knew enough to know that with Reuben gone, it was going to happen. The full moon ritual is a beast all it's own. Given Maxwell is the alpha for the Blacksmith pack again, I figured it would eventually be down to one of you two. You were the better choice." she remarked trying to wiggle out from under him. "Do not look so hurt." She gave up trying to move as the dark haired male slammed both palms into the ground snarling.

Tune in again for another installment of the Nosferatu Adventures starring your heroine...me(straight up story. Remember, Jacob is Edric past and Edric is Jacob future)

May Book Club Day
This month the selection was the novel Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. I decided this time around to skip the movie version, as I've talked about it a few times before on here. (last year when I covered The Vampire Lestat in book club I talked about the movie version of Queen of the Damned)
plot: It's a week until the big rock concert by the Vampire Lestat. Everyone in the world, be it human or supernatural is planning to attend. Some are going to experience the show, others are out to kill Lestat. As the week progresses, we learn that Akasha, the oldest living vampire, has awoken after thousands of years. She makes her way towards the gathering, destroying all in her path. We also learn of a common nightmare all the vampires, and many of the human psychics have been having repeatedly. They keep seeing two red haired twins and a burnt body. No one is certain what the meaning of the nightmare is? It isn't until after Lestat is kidnapped by Akasha, and turned into her personal steward, forced to kill for her, that the remaining vampires come together under one roof to learn the truth of the nightmares and their origins. Akasha feeling affronted by the remaining vampires, gives them an ultimatum. They refuse, and a final showdown between them and Akasha begins.
Okay, so first off, this is one of those novels that has been studied in university courses and by professionals countless times in the last 30 years since the novel was written. I don't know how much I can actually add to it?
This book, which is book 3 of The Vampire Chronicles, is told through the eyes of many characters. From the main characters like Lestat, Jesse, and Maharet, down to minor "extras" like Baby Jenks. Keeping with a bit of a theme, it's like from Royalty down to the Commoner.
It's also the first major depart from a straightly solid vampire story into witchcraft and the outlining areas of other paranormal issues; with the story of the Twins and the Great Family. (something Anne Rice would expand on in other novels)
For me, the characters of Jesse, The Talamasca and the Twins -Maharet and Mekare, were the most interesting. These are the witches and the paranormal researchers in the story. And the core of the two major family lines.
It's a very global thinking story. One that tackles the issues that were being faced in the 1980's when it was originally written. Issues we are only now really years later dealing with. A conscious thought that pointed out the flaws. The vampires gathered at the end; the survivors, are almost like a small version of the united nations. Each representing a "nation" so to speak. (Egypt, Rome, Iceland etc) and take on the responsibilities and perspective of such an enclave. A ruling factor advising the monarch.
It's almost visionary in the way Anne Rice describes the way Akasha sits undisturbed in front of screen after screen, connecting to the rest of the world without participating in it. Much like we do now with endless hours of internetting. It's hard to believe it was written 30 years ago before this was the norm. And Akasha's initial response to the images she sees, is equal to a child acting out on impulse learning that the information isn't always as it first appears. Akasha is trapped not just physically as a statue for thousands of years, but emotionally in her stubbornness. Her need to be right even when she knows just how wrong she is; is one of her only driving desires for so much of the story.
Where as the second novel in the series, The Vampire Lestat, was a clear metaphor for paganism, this seems to be a note on feminism and what one would consider extremism.
It's very female centric. Parallel in the fact Akasha begins killing all the men in the areas she visits, while Maharet ignores all the male family members basically stating that they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Choosing to focus her attention and wealth on the females of her family.
The story is about evolution as much as it is about political boundaries. It parallels the idea of evolution itself with "two great families", both coming from one root. The human descendants and the surviving vampires. Proving that everyone is connected and all is one. We are given a clearer version of this metaphoric truth through the eyes of Baby Jenks as she sees the webbing of souls upon her final death. The same webbing Akasha claims to have seen when she was turned in the beginning.
Unlike the first two novels, the male perspective is down played to the point Lestat is afraid to use his powers. To test just how strong he truly is. As we're reminded time and again in the story that history can repeat itself. It's almost as if he's not sure he wants to admit he could be capable of falling into the queen's viewpoint/actions on his own. Even the most powerful of the male vampires, seem to be in a more docile role. Khayman being forced to rape the twins by the King's order, while the King being controlled by Akasha. Marius, being trapped in ice and completely unable to help himself as he waits for Pandora to rescue him. Daniel the newly turned vampire, who is addicted to Armand's blood.
Okay, I'm going to end this here. I think I've said all I can without a degree in anything.

May Night Bleeds Book
Spudguns!, it's a new month and that means a new selection for book club/movie club. This month's selection is Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. The third novel in the Vampire Chronicles.
It's simple, read the book, blog about it, and if you're inspired to cook/bake/craft etc something because of it, add that to your post. You must have a blog to join in. If you do, let me know by leaving a comment with your post link to either this post or on the actual day's post. The blog post must be current - in this case May 2019.
The deadline is as always, the last Sunday of the month, in this case Sunday May 26th 2019.
Since there is a movie version of this as well, watching the movie is optional. But, the movie version of Queen of the Damned, only covers half the novel.
And as always, if you are in the Thunder Bay area and would like to join me for the physical book club, just let me know.

April 2019 Bookclub day
The selection this month was the novel Bloodline by Kate Cary.
plot: John Shaw, having been injured in the war, finds himself returned home to London, but the events having left him plagued with nightmares. He can no longer tell if the visions he saw of beasts and wolves on the front lines are real or just his damaged mind trying to make sense of it all? While recovering, he falls quickly in love with Mary Seward, the young daughter of Dr. Jack Seward. After having secretly read John's diary, Mary Seward has reason to believe that what John witnessed was real, and fears her best friend Lily; John's sister, has fallen pray to the very monster John talks about in his diary. Quincey Harker. Whom Mary learns is the son of her father's friends. As lies become uncovered, Mary finds herself on a race against time which takes her to the very heart of Transylvania.
This is done in the same style of the original Dracula by Bram Stoker, told from the point of view of each character's diaries and letters. Nearly all the original characters are mentioned in one way or another.
Okay, I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it. I thought the story was great up until the last chapter. For me, the ending just didn't sit right.
For me, I kept waiting for there to be more linking it to the original. I loved the little wink and nod to Renfield's cell, and the fact the heroine is the daughter of Dr. Jack Seward. His appearance was the big highlight for me. I did not care for the sub-plot of the Mina Harker/Tepes character at all. For me, it pulled away from the how the rest of the tapestry was flowing. I also wasn't at all thrilled with the Count Tepes character. He felt like he was just tossed in to fill in a blank. He is mentioned more than a few times in the last half of the novel, but when we finally get any real evidence of him, he's dispatched too easily.
Normally, I find the more common themes and what I think the story was a metaphor for; but I didn't really get a whole ton out of this other than the idea of trust. Everyone seems to be lying to each other in one way or another.
Next month's selection will be Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. I'll be back later in the week with the official announcement for it.

The Nosferatu Adventures s13 p18
The Nosferatu Adventures
page 348, chapter 348
"My cellphone isn't working." Seward said as he waved the little machine. "Like nothing. No bars, no indication of anything." he looked around them nearly spinning in a complete circle. "Where are we? If we were in the warehouse when we went through the portal shouldn't we have returned to the warehouse when we came back through?" Our heroine was barely listening, as she brought her left hand up flexing her fingers before whispering and blowing on her palm. A golf ball size bubble appeared suddenly, a small butterfly held within. She moved her wrist slightly letting the bubble move across her knuckles.
"Wicked." she said wide eyed.
"How'd you do that?" the dark haired human asked just as the bubble disappeared.
"Shack." our heroine huffed. "It's a trick The Seer used to do all the time. I guess his bloodlink ran it's course. Any magick I had from him just ran out." the female banshee plunked down on the nearest patch of lawn, the canvas bag with the spellbook now in her lap. They turned to see Edric returning from just to the left of them. Neither had paid any attention to the fact the hybrid had wandered off in the last few minutes.
"I just found this." Edric said showing them a newspaper. "Look at the date." Seward and our heroine looked at the little black and white print.
"Oh my god! 1976! What the shack?" Seward threw his arms up . "Back in time?" he was still waving the little dead cellphone in his hand trying to understand. He spun around on his heels surveying the landscape suddenly. They were in what looked like a naked plot of land. Half of it was nothing but dirt, with bits of car parts and trash in the far corners by a wire fence. "Are we in a dump?" he shook his head blinking at what he thought were train tracks hidden under long weeds about thirty feet away. Walking over to them, he pointed. "This is where the warehouse should be. By the abandoned tracks."
"Figures." Nosferatu sighed linking her fingers together stretching. The weight of the spellbook causing the canvas bag to slide off her knees.
"What do you mean figures?" Seward was now holding his useless cellphone in both hands like his life depended on it, his knuckles bone white. He crossed back to them his shoulders tight.
"I think that was me. Not on purpose, but it's not the first time it's happened. No puns intended." the two males stood there waiting for more; Edric's eyebrows knitted in confusion and Seward looking like he was about to have a full on panic attack. His fingers were gripping the cellphone to the point they were leaving heat prints. "Way back when I was first in the Darkest Forest, the Seer and I opened a portal, only instead of going to another reality, we landed back a few years in the year 2000. Then another time I'd had enough of things with Dagan, and opened up a portal only I ended up in the 1400's. How I met Vlad actually." she frowned. "Come to think of it, when I escaped Bacchus's palace I ended up back in Rolf's kingdom with a wee bit of a 24 hour time difference." she held up her thumb and forefinger squinting. "Just a touch of jet lag on that point."
"So what you're saying is you can time travel?" Seward asked his chin down eyes wide hands now out at his sides, the cellphone still clutched in his left hand.
"Not on purpose." our heroine picked at a single blade of grass having noticed how it was yellow and split down the middle where as all the others around it were still deep vibrant green. "It's one of the reasons Bacchus is so determined to have me. Well, not have me-have me..." she went quiet for a long pause as she thought about it. Tilting her head to the side she raised an eyebrow as if answering a question to herself. "...at lest that was never hinted at as part of his deal. Anyways, it's one of the reasons Bacchus wants me to rule by his side as the High Priestess Queen of his Bacchae. Because of the portal time thingie. I don't move through the realities in any liner fashion."
"And you're just telling us this now! After we followed you through the portal to begin with and back to what was suppose to be home! You couldn't have said anything oh I don't know, like twenty minutes ago when we were still safe in 2018 in the warehouse?" Seward was standing on his toes red faced getting hysterical.
"Don't you dare!" the female got up to face him. "I never asked you to jump through the portal with me. You did that! That's on you." she bent down snatching up the canvas bag, slinging the straps over her shoulder as she stormed off towards the nearest street.
Tune in again for another installment of the Nosferatu Adventures starring your heroine...me (straight up story. Yes, it was 2018 still in the story's modern timeline when they went through the portal.)

The Nosferatu Adventures s13 p17
The Nosferatu Adventures
page 347, chapter 347
The Seer snapped his fingers freezing the hallway. "You've got less than 30 seconds before they unfreeze, you need to leave." he grabbed our heroine's wrist as he was speaking, and bit down hard.
"Damn it!" she pulled back from him nearly hissing. The Seer wasn't paying attention to her sudden rant, instead just waved his hand causing someone's water bottle they'd been holding to fly twenty feet across the hallway. Grabbing it in midair, he bit his finger squeezing a few droplets of blood into it.
"Drink this after you go through the portal. It will link us psychically for a few minutes. I've got a lot to fill you in on, and blood swap is the fastest way." he nodded towards the props room. "Nosferatu, I'm serious! Every second you're here, the more dangerous the situation will become." he gestured towards the burly ex-boyfriend wide eyed. The Seer sighed then making a shoving gesture sending our heroine flying backward into the props room.
"Come on. We'd better go." Edric mumbled grabbing Seward by the collar of his shirt and dragging him along. The male hybrid shoved his sire through the mirror wanting nothing but to get her as far away from her exes as possible. The three landed in a heap on the ground.
"Shack!" our heroine growled as she rubbed her elbow. "Not cool." She stood then, brushing the dirt from her, before opening the plastic water bottle downing the mixture. "Gross." she stuck her tongue out grabbing the canvas bag from Seward feeling the extreme desire to hold onto the spellbook.
"The Seer's blood?" Edric asked getting to his feet looking around, realizing they were not in the warehouse. "Uh where are we?"
"No. Gross the Seer's blood in vodka. I hate vodka. Whoever this had belonged to, they were drinking on the job." she barely got the sentence out when she sucked in a large gasp. Her eyes turned then to the pure white of the banshee. Images flashed in a crazy 3D effect in front of her. She saw Loki in chains being tortured; which rapidly turning into an image of Damen being struck with an energy ball from Odin, another image overtook that one of someone trapped in stone but she was unable to make out their features, which quickly melted into a vision of complete destruction. A grown up William stood in the middle of a burnt circle, bodies smoking around him, blood covering him like muddy paint, Reuben's heart in his hand. That shifted just as rapidly to an image of Edric in the bathroom of the warehouse talking to someone in the mirror.
Our heroine then heard the Seer's voice ask if she could hear him?
"Yes." she spoke out loud trying to get her barrings. Seward reached for the canvas bag again gingerly taking it from her, and the plastic bottle dropping it into the bag. The look on his face was shock as he continued to look around, trying to figure out where they were as well.
"William can be stopped. But you need your soul back first."
"I don't want my soul back. I had to go through a lot to get rid of it." she started to answer but The Seer's voice spoke over her's.
"It's the only way to keep William from growing up to become king. You have to get your soul back and accept the werewolf part of you again. You have to activate the Frankenstein family curse. Only two kids per generation. The man you saw Edric talking to in the mirror must be born. A Van Helsing must be born so that William dies."

The Nosferatu Adventures
page 346, chapter 346
Five Hours Ago
The smell of roasted vanilla quickly became sour as the pan began to smoke. The woman in the tight fitting white dress with the oversized cherry pattern screamed as she ran away from the stove. Someone yelled cut into the headset just as Edward closed his eyes in frustration, his shoulders a knot of regret. "It's not that difficult people. Just butter and a few herbs." his words were spoken through clinched teeth as he pinched the bride of his nose. Opening his blue eyes, he cracked his neck slightly as he squinted to see the image before him. The actress they'd hired for the cooking show had disappeared, as had the kitchen set and the studio. In it's place Edward was staring into the depths of a black hole that quickly birthed blobs of green light. He hadn't had a vision in years. Stumbling a half step backwards he pressed the heel of his hand into his eyes telling his assistant that he had a migraine as he left the studio. Before he'd even gotten out of the building, he'd had two more visions at a rapid speed. All had one thing in common, the fact Nosferatu was in each. If he was going to stop any of what he'd just witnessed, he didn't have time to research the outcomes, or even book a flight for that matter. Edward had no choice but to take the risk and trust one of the three variations of the visions. He continued on out of the parking lot, dismissing his car, his pace as quick as his body would allow till he crossed from the cemented back lot of the studio reaching the thin line of trees that marked the edge of the city. Finding himself now on the small bike trail used by the local joggers in summer time, and a few random moose lost in winter, Edward gestured widely as he chanted a nearly forgotten spell. A small portal opened up in front of him as he stepped through finding himself on the other side of a large mirror.
About eight minutes ago...
The Seer leaned over reaching for the canvas bag Seward was holding, his right leg up in the air like he was skating, his cheek brushing against our heroine's boobs, his left hand resting on her hip as he balanced himself.
"Total accident right?" our heroine said with a sigh.
"Totally." The Seer replied straightening up, the smirk on his lips seductive by nature and not on purpose. Our heroine noticed how Finn's temperature rose a half notch as he stood just a little too still.
"Oh my god!" Nosferatu gave a slight smirk of her own. "That's why you weren't shocked by my biting you. He's your boyfriend!" she pointed then from Finn to the Seer.
"It's a snacking thing not a shacking thing." the Seer commented as he ran his fingertips over the canvas bag, the aura from it giving off a heat that seemed to pulsate in a sea foam green; not daring to actually touch the spellbook itself. "Speaking of former shackables, you need to leave before Quincey sees you which will be in about..." he screwed up his nose closing his eyes. "30 seconds." he tried once again to guide the female to the portal but she refused to move.
"You saw him?"
"More like seeing. Not a vision...well okay, I had this vision." he pointed to the floor. "Which is why I showed up here but he's on his way over. Like right ...too late." the Seer let his shoulders slump in defeat as our heroine turned to see a man she hadn't thought of in years. A man she didn't recognize because he had aged 25 years. "Geez babe. No wonder you keep falling for werewolves. That was one of your human boyfriends huh? He's like a yeti with all that..." he gestured then to his face to indicate a beard. "...hair. Like an orangutan and the abominable snowman had a baby."

The Nosferatu Adventures
page 345, chapter 345
2012
Our heroine dropped her purse down on the kitchen table as she went to hang her coat up in the hall closet. The movie had not been as good as she'd hoped, as she mumbled to herself about a cup of coffee. Actually, she'd hoped to see the guy she'd met in line again. Bach. But, sadly for her, he'd disappeared before the movie had started. The phone rang as she decided to let the machine get it. "Hello. Hey, sorry I missed the movie. I'll make it up to you I promise. I've got to cancel for tomorrow too, but I'll make that up to you too. Promise promise. Okay. Later." the male voice sounded hollow as the line went dead and the machine made a small beep.
"Sure Qunn. Not like I haven't heard that one before." she let out a deep sigh as the tears forced their way down her cheeks. Her maybe-realationship with Quincey had fallen so far down the trail of importance that it was clear to everyone that it was not working out. It just took our heroine longer than everyone else to admit it. Leaning over, she deleted the message resolving to never speak to him again.
Present Day...
"Mrs. Frankenstein. A word." the voice was over our heroine's shoulder before she realized. Her senses were off. Turning she saw The Seer.
"Edward?" the shock of seeing him nearly floored the female banshee.
"Now!" the dark haired male sidhe grabbed her arm guiding her around the corner. "You can't be here."
"You? The mirror is yours?"
"Nosferatu I'm not kidding. You can not be here in this reality." he seemed to be actually worried as he shifted to look down both directions of the hall. "You, your fledgling and your human buddy need to leave now." The familiar soothing of the Seer's seduction spell was already weaving it's way through her as he continued to hold her arm. Nosferatu shook her head, trying to clear her mind of his magick, but found it no use. His abilities had been strong naturally, but he seemed to be ten times more so since having what was left of Pan's energy. How long had it been since she'd last seen him? For her just over three years had past while she'd been with Rolf and Reuben in Rolf's Kingdom. For The Seer, who knew? "What?" he squinted at her, his blue eyes both sparkling and reflecting a void at the same time.
"How long have you been here? What year is it here in this reality?" her words were a mere breath. She felt dizzy, the seduction spell deep under her skin. Her mind was foggy as she found it difficult to focus on anything but his eyes.
"Oh, Umm..." he cleared his throat rolling his eyes to the ceiling for a half second before closing them again. "It's 2037." Edward less then gently started to guide her back towards the others and towards the props room where the portal was. "If you don't leave right now, you're going to really shack things up." He ran his hand then through his hair. Finally he let go of her, allowing her to catch her breath.
"So sort out this timeline for me then. How long since that last time we saw you? I mean, on your end here." she dug her heels in, moving from him just enough to keep her ground.
"It's been a long time. I lost track. Maybe fifteen years, I don't know." the Seer licked his lips in fret. "I'm asking you please go before something horrible happens." he gestured towards Seward noticing the canvas bag he was holding. "That's extremely valuable. Be very very careful with it. I will want it back someday." he pointed then to the spellbook.
"No. I want answers. I'm not going anywhere." our heroine said demanding the Seer's full attention.
"Fine!" he growled as he bent at the knees in frustration. "What do you want to know?"
"How are you here? How are they here?" she gestured then to Bryon and Finn. "Why do they not smell or taste like they should? Why do you want me to leave?"
"A. I don't want you to leave, I need you to leave. All of you. B. I'm here because I need to feed. Remember? Which I can't do back in our old reality. It's why way way back when in the Darkest Forest, we opened that portal and tried to leave. So when you made the deal with Odin to send Dagan and the others back there, I made a deal with Odin to not go back there. And so here I am. Here, in the one reality you're not suppose to ever be in. And C. These two Finn and Bryon, are not your Finn and Bryon. They belong to this reality. Doppelgangers if you will."
"Why am I not suppose to ever be in this reality?" the female asked tilting her head to the side, her arms now stretched out on either side as she blocked the doorway to the props room. Both Seward and Edric hovering inches away.
"Because this...this was your reality. This was the reality you were part of before Bacchus and Loki found you."

Random movie Waxwork
movie: Waxwork
starring: Dana Ashbrook, Zach Galligan
genre: Horror, Comedy,
year: 1988
format: DVD
plot: A group of teenagers decide to visit a wax museum at night, and find themselves the victims of a devious murder plot. The owner of the museum is using the displays as supernatural portals, and needs eighteen real bodies to finish his work.
This is one of those movies that tried to be too ambitious. You're never really sure what the end goal of the film itself is? Is it a commentary on the animal within (the werewolf, vampire and Marquis de Sade are the longest segments all having to deal with duality and repression) the fear of others (the staff of the museum are a pair of butlers - a midget with an authority issue and a mute strong man) a comment on greed (everyone is rich and the lead villain sold his soul to live forever) or is it something else all together?
As this does try to cover all sub-genres of the larger horror world; vampires/ghouls, zombies, aliens, werewolves, serial killers/psychos, cults etc. You sort of know that each segment of the story will be rushed, as they are only smaller segments of the larger story happening, but you want to linger on them and try to understand why they were used. (Such as using the Marquis de Sade instead of Jack the Ripper to cash in on the fact Hellraiser had just been released.)
The sad part of this is, the film is really pretty good till the last ten minutes, when an angry mob of secret society members shows up to battle the reanimated wax works. Then it just looses all credibility and becomes a massive joke.
