movie: The Green Lantern
starring: Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong
genre: sci-fi, action, adventure,
year: 2011
format; online (Netflix Canada)
plot: A young pilot finds himself chosen to be the protector of earth after an alien crashes.
Okay, three minutes into this and I'm like "vampire movie!" because of the alien bad guy being an energy sucker. Then when you think about it, the movie is also a witch movie, cause of the whole mind over matter-think it and manifest it, that the heroes can do.
I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. Lukewarm is about all I can give it. Reynolds seems to be able to pull off comic book based characters, he's got just the right mix of seriousness/comedic timing that makes you forget you're watching a possibly ridiculous plot.
What did I learn from this? Everyone is capable of more then they think they are at first glance. A hero is more then his ego, more then what he is brought up to believe he is. And there is a little witch in all of us.

Year 3 Day 8
movie: Fast Furious 6
starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker
genre: Action, Drama,
year: 2013
format: Shaw Video On Demand
plot: A group of street racers turned thieves, are asked by the FBI to help track down and capture a violent criminal, stopping him from completing a heist on military weapons. The case goes across Europe from Moscow to London. Old rivalries are renewed, and secret connections exposed.
If you've never seen these films before, it's difficult to tell them apart. I've seen all six, and other then #3 -Tokyo Drift- I can't tell one episode from the other.
Fast cars, big explosions, and the Rock running around doing pretty much what he did in WWE. I'd like to say I really liked it, but to be honest, it was just okay.
What do I think I learned from this? Car fast, fire bad.

Year 3 Day 7
movie: Strange Days
starring: Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett
genre: Crime, Drama
year: 1995
format: online (Netflix Canada)
plot: A drug dealer who sells memories, is given a copy of a high profile murder. He then has to find out who the supplier/killer is.
I'd seen this film 18 years ago when it first came out. I had forgotten how good it was. To see the way the world has turned since this movie first came out, it was almost as if it were a foreshadowing.
This was done in the decade of cyber-punk-backlash. The idea that the not so distant future is the mess we are creating now, and not some uber streamlined clean Jetson's view that we were given in the 1950/60's. I think that's why movies done in this genre are so appealing. It's us on an exam table.
What did I learn from this? Everyone has a weakness, it's how you deal with it, if you give in to it that makes you who you are.

The Nosferatu Adventures
page 92, chapter 92
2000...
Reuben in wolf form, was at the edge of the village, hunting. Dogs howling and barking not far off, something having disrupted them. Nose to the ground, Reuben followed the commotion, his playful side getting the better of him. He wasn't sure who the female was, or why she seemed to be causing the dogs to react the way they were. But she was clearly frightened as she found herself trapped by them, cut off from the path.
The dogs were scruffy looking hunting dogs, that some of the guards from the Fort would use to help trap the werewolves. Reuben could not understand why the dogs were bothering with her?
Spotting the large caramel coloured wolf, the female whispered two words. "Reuben help."
He had no idea how she knew who he was, or that he wasn't just a common wolf for that matter, but he didn't give himself time to over think anything. Licking his chops, the wolf jumped on top of the nearest dog, ripping a chunk out of his neck. The other two dogs growled and whimpered as they turned running towards the pub where their owner was.
"Dude am I glad to see you." the female replied as she threw herself against a wall. "Even if I'm not suppose to." The wolf shook his head as he moved another foot towards her, sniffing deeply. There was a familiar hit on her scent. It took him a moment to realize that he'd smelled it earlier in the area where he'd found Dagan. The wolf sneezed as he moved past her back into the edge of the woods, the female a few feet behind him. She turned her back on him waiting for him to finish shifting into his human self, clearly unnerved by the whole thing. "Don't think I'll ever get used to that." she commented.
"Who are you?" the young Reuben asked, the leaves crunching under foot as he took a few steps towards her.
"How about I answer you once you've got some pants on." she smiled crossing her arms "Not that seeing you naked isn't always a highlight of the afternoon, but dude...I can only stare into those chocolate brown puppy dog eyes for so long before my own eyes wander."
The tall male smirked as he tilted his neck to the side, his long dark hair forming a messy curtain over his face. Lifting both arms out to the sides palms up, the familiar sound of the magic mist began to swarm around him, leaving a pair of faded-almost white jeans on him and a green shirt. "I like you better in black."
Meanwhile...
2013...
Reuben leaned against the nearest tree, a wave of dizziness suddenly coming over him. His ears seemed to be ringing with the overlapping sounds of someone talking to him. Spinning around, the werewolf couldn't see, or sense anyone else in the area, he was alone. Brushing at his shoulder, he could have sworn someone was pressing their hand on it, could feel someone's breath on his neck. He let out a short yelp of pain, grabbing then his arm just under the elbow. Blood began to gleam for a few seconds before he healed, the same sensation when Nosferatu had fed off of him. "What the hell?" Reuben spun around again in a full circle, still not seeing anyone. "If this is a witch trying to put a hex on me, it's not going to work!" he screamed, the dizziness getting stronger forcing him to his knees.
And just as strangely and quickly as it had come over him, it was over. His mind cleared, the pain in his arm gone, the strange noises stopped. Running his hand through his hair, Reuben's eyes darted around the empty woods, as he sprang to his feet headed in the direction he'd left Rolf and Dagan.
Tune in again for another installment of the Nosferatu Adventures starring your heroine...me (straight up story. Reuben needs to stick to black.)

Year 3 Day 6
Movie: Christmas Town
starring: Nicole de Boer, Patrick Muldoon
genre: Family,
year: 2008
format: TV Edit
plot: A single mom who does not care much for the holidays, finds herself and her son in the middle of a town that makes Christmas items, after getting a postcard from her dad whom she hasn't seen in years.
This was a direct to video movie, but has that made for tv feel to it which could be why it seems to be on every year lately at Christmas.
Okay, first off, I can't believe I actually sat through this. Second, I can't believe I am admitting I sat through this.
There really isn't much to this movie. Two people sort of lost end up in a town they were half way suppose to be looking for to begin with, the kid knows that it's "Santa's workshop" and spends the whole movie trying to prove it, while the mom who doesn't care much for the whole holiday, wanders around trying to find her missing kid, meanwhile, everyone else is just acting like it's the most natural thing ever.
They explain the ending by saying they make Christmas props then undo that by having the typical shot of Santa and the reindeer against the night sky. You're left wondering who's lying to whom?
What did I learn from this? I still hate Christmas.

Year 3 Day 5
Movie: I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry
starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James
genre: comedy
year:2007
format online (Netflix Canada)
plot: after his wife dies, a firefighter convinces his best friend to pretend to be a gay couple in order to secure a benefits package for his kids.
Normally, I'm not one for Adam Sandler films, but this was pretty good.
You can look at this from a responsible social point of view, or you can look at this movie from a buddy comedy. It's a buddy comedy.
I know this is an "Adam Sandler" film, but Kevin James manages to steal the show in this.
Some of the scenes, even though they read like any relationship rescue therapy session, it can work for any type of relationship, from business to sibling. And I think that's why this movie works on a dramatic level.
The scene where the two main characters are on a roof trying to rescue a man and start to argue about their "marriage", just works because of the other relationship situations it could be traded out for.
This ends up being one of those "every one wins because everyone is trying to be better" feel good movies, and personally, I think the ending sort of sucked.
What did I learn from this? Family is more then just the traditional, it's where you need it.

Year 3 Day 4
Movie: The Cat in the Hat
starring: Mike Myers, Alec Baldwin
genre: comedy
year: 2003
format: tv edit
plot:Two bored kids end up in a big mess when the babysitter falls asleep and a large talking cat appears. They spend the day then trying to keep the house clean and their mom's new boyfriend away.
Okay, there is no way on earth you can tell me this is a kid's movie. There is no way on earth that you can tell me this is a family movie. And there is no way on earth that you can tell me having Mike Myers as the lead character was a good idea.
The scene where he is singing about getting neutered while in drag is just inappropriate to be in a movie that is suppose to be geared for kids. I don't remember much of the books from when I was a kid, but don't think that sort of subtext was ever in it.
