movie: Whip It
starring: Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore
genre: Drama,
year: 2009
format: TV EDIT
plot:A high school student who has been made fun of by all her classmates joins an all women's roller derby league
This is based on the novel "Derby Girl"
This is like so many movies that take place in the sports world, it's about the underdog and how they bring themselves out of the bottom to the top.
There were a few elements that reminded me of RollerBall (that stared Paul Heyman) but it just never felt like an honest story to me. There was just something about this film that felt too much like it was trying too hard to be indie. (if I just made sense to you then you need a drink too)
In short, I just didn't care for this movie. Drew Barrymore's role in the film is a minor role, but it was her debut as a director which might have something to do with the feel of it trying too hard.
what do i think i learned from this film?
I'm just not a fan of roller derby. Nor a fan of Ellen Page.
