movie: What a Girl Wants
starring: Colin Firth, Amanda Bynes
genre: Comedy,
year: 2003
format: Shaw Video on Demand
plot: a young girl has dreamed of nothing but finding her father. On her 17th birthday, she flies to London to do so, discovering he's about to be Prime Minister.
This is based on a play and seems to be a remake of a movie from the 1950's
First off, I rented this because Colin Firth was in it. And it seems, that he's unable to break out of the 'Jane Austen' stuff. His character was named after the child in Sense and Sensibility, and came across very much like Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary. Add to it, that Anna Chancellor who played opposite him in Pride and Prejudice played opposite him in this in a very similar character.
With that said, this ended up being just another one of those too happy, too sparkly movies from the generation of Disney tv stars. I get that it was a coming of age story, but there seems to be a full generation of actors who's entire career is filled with these cookie cutter films.
what do i think i learned from this film?
The heart wants what the heart wants
