movie: The Three Amigos
starring: Steve Martin, Martin Short
genre: Comedy, Western
year: 1986
format: TV edit
plot: Three out of work actors are asked to go to Mexico to help stop a ruthless overlord from taking over a village, only they have no idea it's for real and think they are being hired to put on a show.
Back when SNL members actually had to have talent and be funny. It reminded me of those spaghetti westerns to a point, but the musical numbers undid that pretty fast. It really does just end up being like one way too long SNL skit, but as I said back when they were actually (smart and) funny.
To be honest, I'm not sure if it's meant as a backwards nod to those older style studio westerns, or if it's meant as a satire of them. I'm going to say both.
Chevy Chase rounds out the little group, but doesn't seem to have as much to do as Steve Martin and Martin Short. This clearly seemed to be designed to push Steve Martin at that time.
What did I learn? The moral of the story is to stand up for yourself no matter how big the odds are.
