Year 3 Day 68

movie: The Crucible
starring: Winona Ryder, Daniel Day-Lewis
genre: Drama
year: 1996
format: DVD

plot: A group of girls in Salem during the witch trials, begin to accuse half the village of witchcraft in order to cover up their own lies and greed, after having been caught working a spell; in hopes of making many of the married men in the area fall in love with them and leave their wives.

Based on the stage play.

This film deals with staying truth to ourselves. It deals with the idea of mass hysteria, greed, and paranoia. All the things that ruled the Salem witch trials, as well as what happened during the 1950's.

One of the sub-plots is a twist of adultery, given that the Ryder character, has seduced a married man, ending up jealous and angry when he ends the affair. This prompts her to start the chain of events, pleading innocence on her end, till the very end when she runs away before he's set to hang.
It's seen as a double edged sword, given it's the one thing the main character is actually guilty of, but refuses to admit to, while he's willing to lie about the witchcraft, admitting at one point to a false confession.
