movie: The Family
starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro
genre: Crime, Comedy, Drama
year: 2013
format: Shaw Video On Demand
plot: A mob family who have been hiding in Europe for the last few years in the Witness Protection program, find themselves once again in danger as a group of mobsters have found them in the tiny French city they are relocated to.
This is based on the book Malavita by French writer Tonino Benacquista.
This has on the surface, a slapstick comedic element to it, but it quickly sails into more of a dramatic film. Pfeiffer and De Niro are seamless as a married couple, who actually get along.
I liked the idea that the four main characters are fairly normal in their day to day lives, dealing with bad boyfriends, school bullies, neighbourhood get togethers etc. The idea that the De Niro character uses his knowledge of his days in the mob to get results and revenge on a chemical company that is destroying the city's water supply, is priceless.
